Heritage English Rose
About Our Garden. These are pictures from our cottage garden throughout the year. We get so much enjoyment out of planting, taking care of the garden; it is really great to see the first blooms in spring time!
What kinds of plants grow in the garden. Scattered throughout the gardens are perennials such as Yarrow, Lady's-Mantle, Aster, Lily-of-the-Valley, Daylily, Hosta, Sedum, Carnation, Baby's-Breath, Lavendar, Lily, Catmint, Peony, Lamb's-Ear, Lychnis, and our favorite, English Roses (in detail below).
In the springtime. Crocus, Daffodil, Iris, Tulip, Phlox, Daylily and Peony all "spring" into action! This time of the year is the most exciting, as things start to bloom, heralding the arrival of warmer days after a long winter.Early summer. This is the time of the year when the peonies reach their full bloom. Roses, both old roses and the modern english roses and hybrid teas are making their splash. We favor red and pink roses, with an occassional yellow one such as the lovely yellow Graham Thomas below.
Late summer. Dahlia are beginning to take shape, this is the time to make sure they are pinched back as to not get too spindly by the fall. Leaves of the Peony is lush, and they provide a lovely contrast with their crop of leaves amongst the roses.
By fall. The roses have started to fade, however, some of the repeat bloomers still have a bit of power to them, especially the english roses and hybrid teas. Hydrangeas are taken inside and dried, the Rhododendrum retain their leaves through winter. Chrysanthemums and Sedum come into play here, filling in bare spots now arriving. Winter is just around the corner, and it is almost time to settle back and go through a season of armchair gardening with garden catalogs!
